James FOSTER death Poor Asylum 1898
« on: Sunday 18 December 16 03:09 GMT (UK) »
Afternoon listers, I found in a Census (1891) a reference to the above James Foster and also his son (another James) who were living at Santon? Villa at that time.

James (snr) was a retired iron founder bn England and the son James aged 34 was a gardener also born England.

Is there any information about people who were in the poor asylum, especially the above James. Were the poor asylum's like workhouses??

Regards

Workhouses were adminstered by Poor Law Unions .

On the Isle of Man there were workhouses in Douglas (Kingswood Grove), Braddan (Ballamona) and Ramsey (St Pauls, Ramsey).

Kingswood Grove is now a Nursing Home.
Ballamona is where the current Noble's Hospital is situated.

See: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/IsleOfMan/

Where did you find a reference to Poor Asylum?

Hi, the death I found for a James Foster was on Ancestry.com IOM burials (1598-2003) and it listed the date of burial 3/6/1898 (approx. birth c 1819) and was Braddan, IOM.  This information seems to be in keeping with the Census.

It also looks as though James (son) on that Census may have married on the IOM to a Margaret Ann Morgan in November 1894. They had both their children  (James Morgan Foster and Robert Kingsley Foster) born there as well.

I still need to ascertain some more information about James (snr) to try and tie him with a John Foster an Iron Moulder/founder who was born in Hunsley c 1787.

Thanks for that link for the workhouses, I'll have a look at it :)

Cheers

I am visiting the Adjacent Isle for Christmas (e.g. England!).
If you still need Manx details looking at in the New Year, I can visit the Museum Library and check the Parish Registers.

Good Afternoon.....and thank you both so much for your help!.

James Foster (snr) bc 1819 in Hunslet (Iron Moulder/Founder) probably did marry Alice HODSON (I couldn't find a marriage as I didn't know what district  Bacup was in - so I've missed that - once again thank you).

I have James (snr) in Census' 1841, (not the 1851 that you found), 1861 in Lancashire, 1871 again in Lancashire, 1881 in Barnsby, 1891 at Santon? Isle of Man with James (jnr).

I also think that between 1861 & 1871, his wife Alice probably had died?? as the 1871 Census with Sarah has her age as being 52 to James' 53 - where the previous 1861 census has Alice as being 39 and James as 44....although that's not anywhere near a confirmation of a second marriage and both Alice and Sarah gave their place of birth as Bolton!.   Anyway, that problem is in the too hard basket at this time!!.

Another interesting piece of information was on the headstone of Sarah Hannah Beeson nee Foster wife of Charles Henry Beeson, it lists the following people.

Sarah Hannah Beeson   First wife         died 1883 aged 37
Fanny Alice Beeson       Second wife     died 1886 aged 24 (*is this the sister of Sarah Hannah)
Kate Beeson                 Third wife         died 1941 (* is this another sister of Sarah's??) aged 84
Charles Henry Beeson    died 1932 aged 81
Charles Henry Beeson     died 1896 aged 2
Herbert Henry Beeson     died 1891 aged 1
Alfred Hodson Beeson      died 1893.

I haven't found the marriages for Fanny and Kate to a Charles Henry Beeson, so their surnames are not known at the moment...but goodness it looks a bit suss doesn't it!!.  And the child  Alfred Hodson Beeson who died in 1893 definitely wasn't Sarah Hannah's child!!.

I would also appreciate the offer of a look at the Parish Registers please, especially if the death of James Foster in 1898 on the IOM has any other information about him.  It's very kind of you to offer, and thank you.

Regards

If you use the new GRO Index search facility, you can find Mother's maiden names for the children's births.
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

You'll need to register first, but it's a free service ;D

Maybe not your James, but . . . .

I can't find a  Charles Henry Beeson marrying either a  Fanny between 1883 - 1886 or
Kate after 1886  :(
Perhaps he did not marry either of them and they just lived together as man and wife :-\

I checked Lancashire BMD but can only see his 1875 marriage entry to Sarah Hannah Foster at Bury Register Office or Registrar Attended -
there is one in Bury for a Kate Foster in 1884 she married John Farrer

It certainly appears to me that they are the sisters of his first wife Sarah Hannah Foster

Fanny Alice Beeson born 4th Nov 1862 died June 1886
Fanny FOSTER  birth registered in Dec qtr. 1862 Haslingden

Kate Beeson born 9th March 1857 died July 1941

Alfred Hodson Beeson born February 1893 died May 1893

Oh boy.....what a tangled family!. :)

You are certainly correct with the information you have posted.  I will check to see if the Kate Foster who married John Farrer in 1884 can be eliminated as the Kate Foster who around 1888 probably did not marry her brother in law ???

Thank you also for the information at the GRO for births (especially) giving the mother's name.  This has been a godsend for me as you can imagine with family named "Foster", it was some hard going to try and ascertain which children belonged to whom!.

Kind regards
