GRO guessing game
« on: Monday 19 December 16 16:06 GMT (UK) »
I have a FreeBMD birth event:

Births Dec 1844
Clayson    Mary Ann Elizabeth        Stepney    2   489

I would dearly love to know the mother's maiden name.

However, I have not been able to find the record in the GRO index,
presumably because the family name (which is compulsory) is badly mangled.

I have tried both "Phonetically similar variations" and "Similar Sounding Variations" to no avail.

Can anyone with a more vivid imagination than me find a family name that will pick this lock?

This may or not help but there is a marriage for
M A E Clayson  to James Lucas 23/04/1863 father William both of 14 Northampton Street, father's occupation Customs officer

Now we need a marriage of a William Clayson I assume

I had exactly the same problem and the advice, which worked, was to look at the actual image through Free BMD and then just enter in the gro birth surname slot whatever the actual image might look like to the uninitiated - it won't necessarily be a phonetic or similar sounding derivative of what you know it to be.

Hope it helps, Pheno.

Not sure about this marriage, 1851 has no mention of a
Mary Ann Elizabeth
1851 shows
William born 1846
Richard 1847
Louisa 1849 all with mother's maiden name of Hurley

Only other way is to purchase the birth cert

From the births of Josiah 1841 & Simeon 1844 the mother's name is Elizabeth. GRO says mmn Hart.
Baptisms for the above show William as a Revenue/Customs Officer.
Also for Emma & Maria 1839 & James Alexander 1848.

The William who married Thomasine was a gunmaker, it was his father also William who was a customs officer, so MAE is sister to the William who married Thomasine

I'm afraid my imagination is not vivid enough either. I thought the "Cl" might have been misread as "D" or "O", but that's not getting me anywhere either :(
