William James Smith 1854 - 1897 was Master of RMS 'Tagus' in 1892 on a voyage to Montevideo. What other vessels did he serve on and when?

You should consult Lloyd's Captains Register, available from London Metropolitan Archives. This should tell you the vessels he served on after obtaining his Mates certificate. For details of ships he served on before becoming Mate you would need to look at logbooks and crew agreements.
I understand copies of LCR are available on microfilm from NMM Greenwich and TNA Kew. In my experience LMA is the best bet.

Unfortunately surnames beginning with the letter"S" have not been indexed on line so you would need to contact LMA directly. They do have an excellent research service although it is a little pricey.
