Francis Day Service lookup request
« on: Wednesday 28 December 16 18:54 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone be so kind as to look up some records for my 2x gt grandad?
Francis Day, born in Newport, S Wales c.1851 and died after the war.
In 1871 census he was in the Brecon barracks, a Pvt of the 1/23rd (Royal Welch).

I think he may have served with the same regiment in WWI but that's all I know!!

If anyone could help me out i'd be very grateful!

Hi,please excuse me asking, but you say he may have served in the same regiment in the first world war, however if he was born in 1851 he would have been about 63 years of age at the outbreak of hostilities in 1914  :-\

Are your dates correct?  :)

(Same query as Frank)

There are medal records for a Francis Day of 2/23rd Foot (later Royal Welsh Fusiliers) for participation in the 3rd Ashanti wars.  Gold Coast medal 1874 with clasp Coomassie for being "north of the Prah river".  Nothing else apparent.

Hi, back again  :) If your man was born 13-1-1851 and was married to Alice Ann Brankley, then there is a public tree on Ancestry which has his service record.

Your local library will possibly let you have free access to it if you don't have a subscription.

Thanks all!
I that's the one Frank! I'll have to look into that public tree.
I found a record for A Francis Day serving in the regt in WWI and thought it could have been him but it was a hunch.

maxD, do you think that Francis was there? I have him in Brecon Barracks in 1871 but at home in the censuses either side.

And back again, so that's your man then  :)

The one MaxD and myself mentioned is the one on the public tree, his full military service record is on there, you need to have a look at it, the award MaxD mentioned is on it  ;)

1st Battalion 1870 to 1873 (hence in the census 1871), off to war with 2nd Battalion  1873/74 then back to 1st Bn till 1878, reserve till 1882..  As Frank says, see the record - all there.
