Henry Johnston - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 07:39 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace my gt grandfather.  His name is Henry Johnston and I understand he was born in Hamilton.    His son - also Henry Joseph Johnston was born in the Shankill in Belfast in 1879.  I guess my gt grandfather would have been born around 1850 -1860.   The only thing known about him was his occupation - baker.   Any help in trying to trace him will be appreciated.

Not sure exactly what information you are looking for but where is Hamilton? and how do you know he was born there? Do you have his wife's name? Have you found him, or the son, in any census records? Did the family stay in Belfast?

I did find a Joseph Johnston born 16 Mar.1879 Belfast with parents Joseph Johnston & Agnes McMaster and also a Joseph Johnston, baker, in Belfast at this time but that doesn't fit with what you've posted.

Title amended.

Thanks for your response.   I didn't make myself very clear in my original post.   I am anxious to trace details of my gt. grandfather who was Henry Johnston, from Hamilton in Lanarkshire.  He was a baker.  Whether he married a local woman or whether he married when he got to Ireland I have no idea.   His son - my grandfather - also Henry Johnston was born in the Shankill in 1879, and I understand he was brought up as a child by an aunt in Disraeli Street, Shankill.  His army records indicate his next of kin were not his parents.   I have not been able to find anything on Irish records relating to his father, and I can only assume my grandfather was brought up by an aunt because he had been orphanned.   This is why I want to look at the Hamilton connection.

Henry Joseph Johnston's birth certificate and parents' marriage will help answer some of your queries but in order to find them more details are needed.

Do you have an exact date of birth in 1879? birth certificate will list mother's name
Do you know the name of the aunt in Belfast?
Do you know what religion the family might have been?
