Help I am lost
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 12:01 GMT (UK) »
I need some help regarding my Irish side of my family tree on my mothers side of the family.  I am researching g g g grand parents, I will provide as much as I can, the problem is on the UK census returns there isn't too much to go on.  I would like some guidance.. My gggg grandfather's details Michael Tierney DOB @1808 Born Ireland he first crops up on the UK 1851 census.  Next is my gggg grandmother Ann Tierny (Nee Reilly) DOB @1815 Born Ireland.  For years I have tried to crack the Irish part of the tree.  I apologise for so little information, there could be someone out there who may have the key for me to carry on with my own research ...Keith

Hello Keith,

Where is he in 1851. Is Ann with him? Are there any children? Where were they born?

Regards
Heywood

Hello again,

Do you have Ann's name, Reilly, from Michael's birth certificate?

I am confused a bit. Looking over an old thread, you mention George son of Michael Tierney.
So, did your Michael Tierney marry Margaret Leyland.
If so, that marriage has Michael's parents as James and Catherine.  :-\

from  Tithes Applotment Books 1823-1837 at the National Arhives
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/
this covers the 26 counties and I found

Tierney Michael   Maddenstown   Ballysax   Kildare   1826
there are 67 Reilly in county but none match

Tierney Michael   Barretstown   Knocktopher   Kilkenny   1830
there are 30 Reilly in county but none match

Tierney Michael   Knockearl,Bricana   Templeharry   King's   1825
Tierney Michael   Temple Harry   Templeharry   King's   1825
there are 7 Reilly in county but none match

Tierney Michael   Sluggarah   Limerick   Limerick   1824
Tierney Michael   Sluggara   Limerick   Limerick   1824
Tierney Michael   Cahirelly East   Caherelly   Limerick   1833
Tierney Michael   Caherelly East   Caherelly   Limerick   1833
there are 13 Reilly in county but none match

Tierney Michael   Farnavorra   Ballysheehan   Tipperary   1827
Tierney Michael   Knockanavin   Glenkeen   Tipperary   1832
Tierney Michael   Ballydrehid   Killardry   Tipperary   1834
Tierney Michael   Shehevry   Upperchurch, Templebeg   Tipperary   1829
Tierney Michael   Commons of Knocervoula   Upperchurch, Templebeg   Tipperary   1829
Tierney Michael   Commons of Knockervoula   Upperchurch, Templebeg   Tipperary   1829
there are 24 Reilly in county but none match

but I had restricted the Tierney to just a Michael , I could redo it and should but I went over to the 6 counties and used the indexs to find Tithes Applotment Books 1823-1837 based upon the work of the Irish Genealogy Hub. The relevant original books are in the
Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) Belfast
and in
http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/armagh-ancestry.php#.V9j1KmWoc5Q
I found both names in the same townland, same parish, and same county
REILY, ANDREW-- TOWNLAND: TULLYVALLON HAMILTON YEAR: 1830-NEWTOWNHAMILTON-ARMAGH
TIERNEY, FELIX-- TOWNLAND: TULLYVALLON HAMILTON YEAR: 1830-NEWTOWNHAMILTON-ARMAGH
TIERNEY, PATT.-- TOWNLAND: TULLYVALLON HAMILTON YEAR: 1830-NEWTOWNHAMILTON-ARMAGH

so if I was a betting man that’s the winner for the most likely place where bride and groom met.
in the same way I further selected out the Michael Tierney entries from the same source
Tierney, Michael-- Townland: Carricknagavna Year: 1828-Forkhill-Armagh
Tierney, Michael-T: Cregnadeveskey Y: 1825-Termonmaguirk-Tyrone

so this means to me that Michael might be living with his father mother a widow, or a brother if church records exist it is worth checking so

I am about to post and noted a James could be the father of Michael, so here are the possibles in the 6 counties, you could look up the national library for james in the 6 counties.
Tierney, James-T: Bockets Y: 1829-Killeeshill-Tyrone
Tierney, Jas.-Tl: Drumrainbaun Yr: 1834-Galloon-Fermanagh
Tierney, Jas.-Tl: Keeranbeg Yr: 1834-Galloon-Fermanagh

The Tithes are very useful but were not state organised but by the Church Of Ireland, and are incomplete,  but better than nothing.
I  have run out of time, keep going
