I suspect that this is William's birth registration on the new GRO Index:-

MASON, WILLIAM 1882 (no mother's maiden name -i.e. illegitimate) M Quarter in ASHBY DE LA ZOUCHE Volume 07A  Page 85

Sarah was presumably his mother and married James Spurr later that year.

Thank you all for your help. This was just what I needed.
I don't know the area very well so was confused by the Kegworth/ Castle Donnington and Derby/Leics part.
This will definitely be a trip for me in the new year.

I think you are correct. William and John were brothers, the sons of Robert Mason and Ann(a).

I think the correct relationships to James Spurr on the 1891 census should be
William Jnr - Stepson
William Snr - Wife's uncle
