Hi we have the Hutment Camp, Normanby Rd  Scunthorpe on a death cert in 1952, can anyone tell me what it was. Is it connected to the steel works.

I wonder if it was something like this ie a squatters' camp using old military huts?

Jan has the answer....the definition of "Hutment" is an encampment of huts....there are many examples if you google images.

My grandad had an allotment in Normanby Road about this time, but I can`t remember this particular hutment camp; I think I may have a bit too young !!

However, I have a feeling there was also one on Brigg Road, almost opposite the steel works; I think they were some  sort of concrete shelters.

I think they were classed as squatters camps, formerly army huts. Apparently they weren't very nice places.

An example:

Keep on scrolling down for various extra information and links.

So using the word 'squatters' and calling them not very nice places is rather mis-leading.

e.g.
'I have fond memories of our cosy hutment, '

Hi, there is another bit from the internet here, this particular information does use the description "Squatters Camps"..........................

http://www.historyandpolicy.org/policy-papers/papers/the-hidden-history-of-housing

It can be read in the paragraph "Squatters in the post-war years" and does actually mention Scunthorpe, there was also a disused R.A.F camp at Sandtoft in Lincolnshire known affectionately as the squatters camp, my Great uncle lived on it prior to getting a house in the late 40's and early 50's.

Possibly the word "squatter" post war, didn't have quite such a negative meaning as we think of it today? There must have been thousands of people who were homeless due to having lost their homes through being bombed. I would guess that it was these people who moved into the disused military camps until new houses were built.

It is clear from a number of newspaper reports across the country of the time that these were ex-services camps being used by local authorities primarily to ease the post war housing shortage (doesn't preclude some folk squatting in them).  One report queries why the school room shortage could not be helped by usng such hutments.  Lots of discussion in parliament about them (see Hansard 1950s).

One imaginative use in Hartlepool in 1951 was the use for youth club holidays at 30 shillings a week!
