Yes they are only for soldiers who died in service, The  records for  the First World War are  available, but are stored off-site at  Donnington. There is no access to  Donnington for the public but the  National Army Museum will search on behalf of  a reader. The  turnaround time can vary as it is only worthwhile  going up  there  from Chelsea when they have enough enquiries to justify a trip/overnight stayThey charge £10 per entry for the  research.

I went to my aunts and took a picture of the plaid, can you identify it. I also took a picture of the hat, on the emblem it has Argyll Sutherland Highlanders I will send it also. The kilt has numbers and letters stamped on the inside of the waist band will send also. The Jacket is missing.

leon,thats a black watch tartan and the bonnet and badge of the argyll and sutherland highlanders,hes one of mac cailean mors boys,if he served in south africa,then he was either in the first batt or he went out with the 3rd or 4th,some of the volunteer companys went out as well,the A+SH wear the black watch kilt inc the pipers,the bagpipes have sutherland ribbons,the sporan is black hair with 6 white tassels,his tie would be purple+green with thin gold stripes,when norman was serving,his colonel was colonel george erskine,their HQ was at stirling castle,the regts motto is the combined mottos of the argylls and sutherland regts [91st+93rd foot], MOTTO.SANS PEUR NE OBLIVICARIS,without fear do not forget. ne obliviscaris is your family motto,hows that leon,not bad for a sassenach,mack
