Finding a soldiers records WW2
« on: Tuesday 03 January 17 17:03 GMT (UK) »
My husband is trying to find out more about his fathers records in the army in WW2
We don't know his military number, only a little information of things he mentioned prior to his death.
A few years ago. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.
His name was Douglas Leonard William Hards born 1921 Horsham
We think he was in the Royal Sussex Regiment, possibly Artillery. But when looking at their units it was impossible to make a connection as there was so many to tell which he was attached to.
He was definitely at Tangmere Airfield, on the defensive guns during the Battle of Britain.
Then it gets a bit vague. He mentioned the following.
North Africa, Egypt and Field Marshall Montgomery.
Also a battle in Italy and the city of Florence maybe for respite.
The enclosed photo has North Africa WW2 written on the back.
Blenkinsopp: Whickham & Co Durham
Leaton: Co Durham & Northumberland
Blenkinsopp Leaton: Co Durham & Northumberland & London.
Powell: London & Surrey
Vincent: St Oysth & London
Buckfield: Sutton Surrey & London,

This would appear to be the same hat badge - Royal Artillery

Have found a Douglas Wm Hards on Royal Artillery attestations -

Service No. 1797163
Attestation year   1941
In the Transfer to other corps or cause of becoming non effective, the notes are -
To E Surrey Rest 25.8.44, 5612A

Could this be your father in law?

As previously posted the best course of action would be to apply for his service record from MOD.

Thank you J JEN
yes this would be my father in law.
I have had trouble with his number of names before and I have come across that exact naming before.
The worst was his marriage which was registered wrong, as I have the original certificate now, I did inform the records office of the correct name. I don't know if they amend them.
the information you gave me will enable me to find his medals record, the actual medals are no longer available.  Other members of the family wanted them sold.
my husband will apply for his actual records as his next of kin.
Can anyone tell me if Tangmere was used to train the new soldiers for the artillery.

The one above mentions the Royal Artillery guarding the Tangmere Aerodrome against the Luftwaffe.

Please bear in mind that it can take quite a while for Service records to be sent out.

Can you tell me what this sentence in the records mean. Particularly the second row.
