finding my biological mother
« on: Thursday 05 January 17 04:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,
This is my very first post, as I just registered 10 minutes ago. I am a 32 yr old male, who was adopted at the age of 2 months. As far as I know, my biological mother has passed, but I have my doubts...as I can not find a death cert. I have found her birth cert and marriage certs on ancestry.com but no death. I need help. I need to know if she is dead, and where she might be burried. I need closure. Please help me...I have her full name, DOB, and county of "death"/birth. She also had another son...my half brother. I would LOVE to locate him as he is still living...to my knowledge. I have his full name, DOB, and last known address also. Please please please help. Thank you in advance.

I recommend that you contact the Red Cross and  the Salvation Army who have finding services in Australia at least. If they are not the correct people they should know who is. They will also probably know the legal niceties of the country you are in.

Someone suggested that you could put a put post in the find living relatives section of Genes Reunited.  "GR does free ten day trials ...Worth it for the living relatives section." -- they say

Also try the phone book and google and the electoral rolls -- even if a little out of date  electoral rolls would give you an address and people tend to stay put.

{added} The adoption agency may also be willing to help.

Have you checked the Social Security Death Index?

No i have not checked the SS death index...would I need the SS# because I don't have it. I did just try the genereunited.com but it appears to only be for England

Not a US expert (no experience there at all) and many others will no doubt reply.

However,  I would think that the NGOs such as Red Cross and Salvation Army probably have similar roles world-wide
and would be a good resource for referral and advice if nothing else. Plus both I think would be a "kindly ear".

Phone books and electoral rolls exist everywhere in some form.

I think Erato's suggestion is clever and I suspect he may have other useful insights.

No, you don't need the SS#.  It helps if you know the year of birth [or you can put an approximate range], especially if it's a common name.  It helps if you know [or can guess] the state where the person died.  If you're looking for your mother, you need to enter the surname she would have been using at the time of her death, not her birth name.

You can search the SSDI here:
