Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Re: 1911 entry - what is his birthplace and birthyear?

If he was born before 1871 you can look for him on the 1871 and 1881 censuses both of which are free on Family Search

https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1538354?collectionNameFilter=false
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/2562194?collectionNameFilter=false

Buying a copy of his marriage cert could give you his fathers name which will help to find the right census entry

Looking at the 1901 census he was born 1867 in East Dereham, Norfolk. His army record is on Ancestry where he gives his wife's maiden name as Draper and marriage as 3 Sep 1887 Mattishole Norfolk.

There is an 1871 entry for a James Gathercole aged 6 b Gressenhall but living in East Dereham.  He is the stepson of James George who married Frances Gathercole in 1867.

However - in 1861 - Frances is shown as a pauper - widow - and is in the Gressenhall Workhouse with her older children

This suggests James was illegitimate

He seems to change his age from census to census!

1911   1865
1901   1867
1891   1864
1871   1865

I'd guess this could be his birth ( from GRO)

GATHERCOLE, JAMES  WILLIAM
1863  D Quarter  MITFORD
Volume 04B  Page 277

No mother's maiden name given, which fits with what Carole says. The other birth around that time in Mitford has the mother's maiden name as Crane.

However, thinking about it, it depends whether the Frances Gathercole who married in 1867 was a widow or whether she was single. Can anyone find a marriage of a Frances Crane to a Gathercole and then a death of a Gathercole after 1863 in Mitford?

EDITED: Posting this anyway, but Carole has confirmed what I was thinking.

See reply above - Frances Gathercole is shown as a widow in 1861 and details of 1867 re-marriage are shown plus 1871 entry

James was illegitimate

Hi Carole

Can I just clarify, are you saying that James's mother was Frances Gathercole (nee Crane) but that his father wasn't a Gathercole? Or have I got the wrong end of  the stick?

There were two James Gathercoles close to each other in date and a death of a baby James in 1864 here, which one?
