No not at all, some of the earlier ones are quite humorous to read - bequeathing all plates, 3 bedsteads and beds in one of hubby's ancestors  ;)

Joseph seems to have risen in the world quite rapidly.

1851 - ship's carpenter
1888 - gentleman

Thanks Brentor boy, a high flyer at last. Can I ask where you found him to be a gentleman?

He was described as a gentleman in his will. (See #6)

Oh yes apologies, I missed that. Would a gentleman have been what we would think of as upper class/ wealthy or does it have some other meaning? I'm guessing from all his marriages that he was either handsome or wealthy!

The term gentlman was usually applied to someone of property or social status but I see that in 1881 he was described as " retired shipwright" and still living in 3 Peat Place so perhaps he had not advanced as far as it seems.

When he died his estate was valued at £487.14s.7d so not a pauper. ("Find a Will" site)  One calculation suggests that to be equivalent to more than £50,000 in current values.

Thanks so much for your help, I will definitely be using the will site for other ancestors. It's great to get good advice and help on how to pad out the bare bones of names and numbers.
