Incomplete banns of marriage
« on: Monday 09 January 17 11:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello - two of the records on the attached page of marriages from a parish register are incomplete - it appears the banns were read twice and then there is no further note.

Does this indicate the marriages did not take place?

if the couple were both of the same parish then you would need to check the parish marriage register for 90 days to see if the marriages took place later.

If either of the party was of another parish you would need to do the same elsewhere.

The Banns should have expired after 90 days but the couple may have married later and called the Banns again or not at all.

Looks as though Nathan and Deborah got married at some stage.  Baptism at Great Sankey, 18 September 1774 - Nathan son of Nathan and Deborah Banner.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

The source for the marriage of Nathan Banner and Deborah Luras (sic) on 2 Nov 1760 is a FamilySearch database, without image. Since the same entry in the register can include both banns and marriage, I suspect that someone has taken the first date of publication of banns and put it in the database, thus misleading people as to when and where the marriage took place.

In fact it appears to have taken place on 29 Dec 1760 in Farnworth, according to the image of the BT at Ancestry. Quite what happened at Prescot (?) in the extract posted here may remain uncertain. Clearly the minister at Farnworth believed the banns had been read properly in Prescot, or he wouldn't have taken the ceremony. Other banns were read on 16 Nov (see the right-hand page), so it may simply be that they forgot to fill out that page of the register. Maybe looking into the couple in the other entry (Mercer-Seddon) might shed some light on it, though as they seem to have been both "of this parish" there won't be another parish to check against.

if the couple were both of the same parish then you would need to check the parish marriage register for 90 days to see if the marriages took place later.

It's not clear which is the parish church referred to here, though most probably Prescot.  The other records show men of 'this parish' but actually from Parr or Sutton, now part of St.Helens.  The Farnworth referred to will be the 'village' on the northern edge of present-day Widnes, a few miles SE of Prescot.

Perhaps the couple decided to abandon Prescot, and start a new set of banns at Farnworth ?

No, the banns dates at Farnworth were the same as the Prescot ones (as far as they were recorded), ie 2, 9 and then 16 Nov 1760. Because the couple were from different parishes they would have needed to have the banns read in both of them.

Thank you for all the replies. I  forgot to say in the original post that I couldn't find any trace of the marriage in the parish of Prescot or any in the vicinity.

Esther Seddon was a widow - and a widow of that name is buried in Prescot in 1775.
