I am trying to find records of the parents of my grandfather..James Pott who was born in 1884 in Ashton and died in 1937 aged 53 and married to Floris Walton. I have hit a stone wall on this and should be greatful for any help.

The GRO search facility is now showing Mother's Maiden Names on births from 1837.   So:

Birth, March qtr 1884
Ashton-under-Lyne Registration District     vol 8d, page 575

Pott, James     Mother's Maiden Name: Wood


And this looks like the baptism:
9th March 1884, at Mottram Unitarian Church
James Pott, son of George and Mary Ann Pott of Hollingworth
(George was a weaver)
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)
