Cornwall to Plumas California

l'm trying to find any info on the following.
John Henry Stephens(Stevens) b.Abt 1838 Cornwall married to Mary Trevena b. Abt 1840 Cornwall England travelled to California prior to 1866.
John Henry Stephens was a quartz miner.
l have no details of whom their parents were, and believe they went together by themselves after marrying.

l do have the following from the 1870 Census.

Mary, Wife, Age 35; POB:  England, Occupation:  Keeping House
William Henry, Age 5, POB:  California
James, Age 4, POB:  California
Mary, Age 2, POB:  California
Susan, Age 3/4, POB: California

Prior to 1877 the family returned to England. My records show that they sailed from Plymouth to Australia in 1877.

Any info on immigration to US from Cornwall or shipping records from US to Plymouth? would be appreciated.
Sites l have checked out, unfortunately state that records were not kept for the years l'm looking at due to the California gold rush.

l have tried The USGENWEB California as well as numerous Plumas County sites. They were indeed informative, but unfortunately did not cover the shipping periods l would be looking at.
