Zebrugge ferry disaster victim.
« on: Monday 16 January 17 14:56 GMT (UK) »
I'm after some help looking for the grave of a victim of the Herald of free enterprise ferry disaster in 1987.
i work with someone who was returning from Germany on leave with a Gary William Thomas, my work  friend was fortunate enough to survive but unfortunately his close friend wasn't.
My friend was in a bad way when he was taken to Gary"s funeral and all he knows is that it was a graveyard in the Liverpool.
This year will mark the 30th anniversary of the tragedy and my friend would like to visit the grave.
I'm looking for the grave of an ex forces person named Gary William Thomas who is buried in a graveyard in the Liverpool area, who died on 06/03/1987.
Thank you.

Hi, welcome to Rootschat.

If you do a Google Search for Gary William Thomas Herald of Free Enterprise,  it leads you to a Facebook page where some one posted in memory of him a couple of years ago. They say "The Army did him proud, though, with the military gun salute and the church was packed to bursting, so he was very well thought of and honoured, properly. Absolutely fitting for such a lovely guy…"   If you can find that page and contact them, they will probably be able to give you details of where he is buried.

Just read that Jen - how sad the fact that he was due to be married. I can remember that disaster really well, especially as I'd done the same journey a few months before.

It may have been at St Michael C of E Huyton parish church cemetery which I think was still allowing burials at that time (it was closed to further burials in 2001) or at the nearest RC cemetery, Yew Tree Cemetery in West Derby, Liverpool (but sometimes linked to nearby Huyton).

This map shows St Aidan's and St Michael's churches and the cemetery near to St Michael's:-

Richard would like to say a huge thank you to you all for the information you have all given, he is now in the process of planning his visit to Liverpool and a visit to Gary's grave on 30th anniversary of the disaster.

Hi

I know this post was a long time ago and this is a long shot BUT I am also looking woot the location of Gary William Thomas.

I have been trying to find his location for a family friend for some time. If anyone has any information that would help. I would be so grateful.
