 Carrying on trying to find the 2 daughters-Nicholas and Margaret Jane.

Just some very sketchy thoughts:

 in the California, Marriage Records from Select Counties, 1850-1941
Marriage Date:   17 Sep 1902
Marriage Place:   Alameda, California
Spouse:    John D McConnell

I think Nicholas has become Nettie/Nellie.

There are Naturalization Records for Margaret Jane HOGG a widow born June 22 1867 Kirkcudbright. One of the witnesses is Nettie McCONNELL of Daly City.
The other is C.B. Kiler a carpenter of Sutter St San Fran who seems to be a neighbour. He is the informant on Margaret's death and makes a bit of a mess of the info.

Ellen Macaulay age 34 married born about 1906 Scotland nurse (travelling companion )
Nettie MConnell age 64 widows  born California think they have the birth places mixed up 

There is a death for an Ellen Macaulay  5 April 1960 San francisco birth date 11July 1903
Father John McConnell b Scotland mother as Jeanette Anderson

Just looking at the info you found for Ellen got me wondering if they'd made a mistake on Jeanette's surname at the time. It's down as M*donald.
But I guess she re-married:

California Death Index has Jeanette Macdonald born abt 1876 (says South Carolina but? ) Death 16 May 1963 Marin. She's also on Find a Grave.
