Sheldrake of Coddenham & Gosbeck
« on: Wednesday 18 January 17 21:36 GMT (UK) »
Little did I dream when I travelled every day between Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich thirty odd years ago that I was travelling past part of my family origins in Suffolk.

I am looking for information about my gt gt gt gt grandparents John and Hannah Sheldrake of Coddenham and surrounding parishes.

Some of their children were born at nearby Gosbeck. There is a possibility that after this they moved to Coddenham as George/Joshua Sheldrake my ancestor stated on a census that he was born in Coddenham and there are burials for a John Sheldrake 1755-1825 and Hannah Sheldrake 1759 - 1822 in Coddenham.

If anyone can shed further light on these folk I should be extremely grateful.

Hi not my area but the only marriage I could locate is a John Sheldrake to Hannah Goymour 14th November 1781 Stonham Aspall?

No idea how close this is to Coddenham/Gosbeck?!

Stonham Aspell is next to Coddenham and Gosbeck, separated by the chapelry of Crowfield according to Phillimore's county parish map which is viewable on Ancestry.  I suspect Crowfield may have become a parish latterly.

Hi,

To add to the info from keyboard, the Marriage index issued by the SuffolkFHS lists the 1781  marriage of John Sheldrake, as of Mickfield.

FreeREG has a possible JOHN Sheldrake Baptised 5 Sept 1756, St Andrew, Mickfield to JAMES/ANN
(Seems to be the only Child transcribed to them)

There was a Samuel/Clemence Baptising Children Mickffield also c 1750 and a couple of their Children were Baptised Debenham including a John 1757.

Woo hoo,

Many, many thanks to you all. The link to Mickfield confirms a previous vague feeling since it is so close by.

Are there by any chance entries for John and Hannah's children earlier than Joshua George Sheldrake (1800)?

Kind regards,

Howdie

These villages are all close together along an axis between Coddenham and the 'town' of Debenham. The road between them is supposedly of Roman origin "Stone Street" which the village of Crowfield is located on.

Crowfield is currently topical in the local news - "Villagers at scene of long-running armed police stand-off in Crowfield say ‘it’s been nice and quiet’"  - the local attitude to life which maybe hasn't changed much since 1750. There are some pictures of the village in the news article on this shrunken link -  http://www.rootschat.com/links/01jb7/

Thanks for that Article, I had a good chuckle, what a sweet reminder that Village is of times past.
More the sort of thing I would have expected on this side of the World in my Parents time. :)
