Eliza Ruth Neale marriage
« on: Tuesday 24 January 17 21:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out who Eliza Ruth Neal/Neale married. Eliza is the daughter of Arthur Neale and Ruth Harvey and was born in Q3 1884 in Paddington.

I'm trying to find out who she married in 1904 in Kensington. I think it's either Joseph John Bagnall or William John Puttock but I can't find out who exactly.

To cloud things, there's also a Ruth Eliza Neale (b:1883) who married a Harry Swain on 12th October 1902 in Kensington. I don't believe this is my Eliza Ruth (apart from the name order, but these seem interchangeable quite often) because Eliza's father is given as Arthur Richard Neal and was a horseman. I think Eliza's father didn't have a middle name and he worked as a labourer.

Can anyone help?

Regards

John Joseph Bagnall appears to have married May Evelyn Gatehouse.

They had this child?

BAGNALL, ELSIE  MAY     GATEHOUSE     Order
GRO Reference: 1907  D Quarter in ST MARYLEBONE  Volume 01A  Page 499

So that leaves William John Puttock and Eliza Ruth Neal. There is a couple by that name in Walton-on-Thames but she is older than your Eliza and from a different place!

Will take my smelling salts now.

I think possibly the marriage you have discounted could possibly be the correct one.

Her baptism record does give her date of birth as 27th June 1884, the death registration of Eliza Ruth Swain also gives her date of birth ~ 27th June 1884 :)

Arthur and Ruth Neal baptise a son Arthur RICHARD Neal 15 Jul 1877, not conclusive but it seems a coincidence.

There is also a probate entry in which she is named as 'Eliza Ruth Swain or otherwise Ruth Eliza'

Have you by chance spotted the army record of her brother William Robert Neal ?  Quite sad reading.

Thanks Claire and others,

I'll follow up the Swain connection.

Yes, I've researched William Robert Neal. He had 4 daughters, he was at war (and died there), his wife died in 1909 so the kids were sent to St Vincent orphanage except for Jennie, the youngest, who, for some unknown reason, was sent to Aberdeen! William's eldest daughter, Agnes, was illegitimate and born in the workhouse. Talk about a hard life!
