Robert Grant Esq London and his daughter Margaret McPherson Grant.
« on: Wednesday 25 January 17 02:00 GMT (UK) »
I have attached her marriage certificate. Please, where do I go from here to her father's details?

Margaret his daughter was supposedly born on 12 Aug 1818 in Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland but I have not found any supporting evidence except approximate year from census and immigration.

She was aged 20 in 1838 at marriage, aged 20 in 1841 Census, aged 34 in 1851 Census and aged 35 when immigrated to Australia in 1854. She married on 2 June 1838 in Aberdeen, Aberdeen. After and before marriage they lived in Elgin or Drainie, Moray, Scotland.

Family story says she was disinherited when she married beneath her station.

On her marriage certificate her father is stated as Robert Grant Esq of London.

I have looked and looked for any Scottish records but other than the marriage and census that is all I have.

Where can I go from here? Perhaps father married in England. I just don't know. Could someone please give me some pointers of what records to look in?

Other people's family tree are not much indication as they know as little as me or I can not find what they base their info on.

I don't particular want the information given to me on a platter I just need guidance on where I can search. So I can see the record for myself to make a determination.

Thank you

 ;D  Welcome to RootsChat  ;D

Where has Margaret used 'McPherson' as part of her name?  I am just not seeing anything?

A few observations - she was underage when she married, she did not name any of her sons 'Robert', and they didn't marry in either of their home parishes.

Unfortunately it is the same for everyone when you get back to pre civil registration, and it is often very difficult to find conclusive records with the information you have.

The birth certificate of one or other or both of the Australian born children would give Margaret's place of birth if it was known to the person registering the birth.
She may have registered it herself, in which case it may show on the certificate.
This is the information shown on birth certificates in Victoria at that time.

Name
Date
Place
Father's name
Father's occupation
Father's age
Father's birthplace
Mother's name
Maiden name
Mother's age
Mother's birthplace
Marriage date
Previous children

Certificates can be downloaded immediately after online payment (about 24 dollars).

There is a Mrs WISEMAN (No first name, no initial) recorded as 35 years of age on the passenger list for the ship Mississippi arriving Victoria 1854.

Mississippi, arriving Melbourne March 1854
Boarded at London, travelled as Cabin passengers:
Mrs Wiseman, 35, a Servant, Scotch,  ‘1 boy born Port Phillip’ (I may be misunderstanding that remark)
Alexander Wiseman, 13, Scotch
John Wiseman, 10, Scotch
Lewis Wiseman, 8, Scotch
George Wiseman, 7,  Scotch

1851:
Drainie, Morayshire.
Everyone on census born Morayshire.

Lewis Wiseman   36
Margaret Wiseman   34
Alexander Wiseman   12
John Wiseman   9
Luis Wiseman   6
George Wiseman   4
Louisa Wiseman   2
Jane Wiseman   Under 3inof
Alexander Wiseman   13 Lodger

Edit:
I have to go out but, looking at early newspaper articles from Morayshire, there are 2 men named John McPherson Grant mentioned ( snr and jnr)

In 1852, a man from Elgin named Robert Grant was living in London.
He was awarded the Royal Astronomical Society's Gold Medal  for his work and wrote a book called
The History Of Physical Astronomy.
At this stage, I cannot get any indication of his age, but from one quick skim read, due to an illness in his teenage years,  he returned to his studies  a bit later in life

Hi

Have you looked at the excellent "libindx" site? Entering the name Lewis Wiseman not only produces some of the information which I am sure you already have but refers at the foot of the page to a 1993 miscellaneous article, family history "The Three Wise - Men".

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)
