Harry Lanning
« on: Wednesday 25 January 17 12:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm very new to this. Am looking into the Service history of my Grandad Harry Lanning ,who was born in Landport , Portsmouth in 1899. I know he served as a private in the Bedfordshire regiment in WW1 and received the Victory and British War medals. Most of the other sites come to a dead end or cost  a lot to continue. Would also welcome any other information on the Portsmouth Lanning family in general. Harry's  last known residence was St Faiths Road in Landport where he lived until his death 1973 with wife Annie. His daughter ,my mum ,was Lily Martha. Harry also lived for some time in Bermondsey & Camberwell with Annie .

Welcome top RootsChat! ;D

To start with, some two-thirds of the WW1 Service Records were lost during a WW2 bomb raid.
If you can't find Harry's, his record was probably one of them.

Have you found him on the 1911 census (the latest census available)?
Unfortunately copyright issues prevent us looking for you.

You could also look for him on the 1939 National Register - that's available on FindMyPast. Free to search, but costs money to look at the details.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Have you got his marriage cert to Annie?  That hopefully would give his fathers name and help you to get further back.

though, looking at 1901 census, there is really only one contender for him!
