1880s-1890s Cumberland ships
« on: Wednesday 25 January 17 23:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I've been looking into my great grandfather's sailing career and have found three ships that he was on from the merchant navy records.
In 1881 he was listed on the "Fisher" with the previous ship listed as "Signus".I can't find any trace of this Signus but can find several under the spelling "Cygnus"
Later in 1891 he was listed as crew on the "Clifton Grove".
I can find an accident and sinking report for the Clifton Grove but I'm not sure on the other ships. The Fisher was described as a Barque.
My Great grandfather lived in the Whitehaven,Workington,Harrington area and I'd really like to find more info about these ships and would really like to find photos or pictures of them.
My great grandfather's name was John Davy and he was born around 1856.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Hello Mojo47,

From your post, I'm guessing that you got your vessel names from the CLIP (Crew List Indexing Project) crew lists at FindMyPast. You need to go back there and get a more important piece of information for each of them - the Official Number - sometimes written as ON, O. N. or O/N.

The O/N is a unique and permanent identifier for a vessel, remaining constant throughout changes of ownership, changes of registry and changes of name. It is invaluable in distinguishing between multiple vessels of the same name.

I can't do it for you because I don't have a sub.

Please also tell us John Davy's rank/s aboard each and any numbers that may be written in beside his name (could be register ticket number or certificate number, both useful leads to further information).

Have you also looked for him in the merchant navy records at Ancestry? They have ones different to FindMyPast's offerings.

If the crew list for FISHER includes the O/N for SIGNUS, so much the better. You can take that to the CLIP website ......

http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/vesselsnum.php

... and feed it into the "Ships by Official Number" search box to find out if the name has indeed been phonetically mispelt and should be CYGNUS.

Cheers,
Westoe

Hi Westoe,

Thanks for your input. This is what I now have:

Signus: name only

Fisher: No 39222 registered Carlisle built 1857?
Appears to as missing in North Sea in 1882 when bound for Stockholm.Built Prince Edward Island.

Clifton Grove: No 85810.Steam and possibly sail built 1883 and sank 1919 registered Bristol

John Davy is listed as an Able Seaman born Whitehaven but that's all I've got. This came from the FindMyPast site.I can't find anything on ancestry:(
Records were from 1881 Signus/Fisher and 1991 Clifton grove.

I'd really like to find more on all three.

Hello Mojo47,

On the 1891 for CLIFTON GROVE, was John Davey's "previous ship" shown as FISHER? I just want to be sure on that.

There is a little bit on FISHER in the 1880 Mercantile Navy List here:
http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/viewimages.php?year=1880&name=FISHER&page=284&imagesource=CLIP%C2%A0images

FISHER mentioned as built PEI, Canada 1857 here:
http://www.islandregister.com/1857newvessels.html

There is a fairly extensive 1920 Board of Trade (BoT) wreck report on CLIFTON GROVE which will give you a lot of info on her specs here:
http://www.plimsoll.org/resources/SCCLibraries/WreckReports2002/21299a.asp

Cheers,
Westoe
