In the 1861 census, we have Thomas Slator (not Slater) 26 a lodger and bookseller living in Ipswich with his wife Mary C (Charlotta), born in Newport, Pembs. and sons Thomas H (2) and James L (1), both born in Paddington.
Thomas and Mary had married on 30th March 1858 in Newport, Pembrokeshire.
I have Mary C living in Newport, Pembs. in 1901, but nothing else between 1861 and 1901.
**
What happened to the family? Was the father of Thomas a James Slator or Henry Slator?
**
I believe the son Thomas Henry died in California in 1908.
As always, any information is greatly appreciated.
Richard

I found the 1871 record. It appears that it's under STATER not SLATER.
I'm pretty sure that's our Mary Charlotta and her sons.
Thanks
Richard

... and the 1881 Census record in Lambeth just has to be Mary C as a sister-in-law to Henry. Being born in Newport, Pembs. would be too much of a coincidence for anyone else, I think.

Thanks so much. I shall enter that on Anc***** too.
Meanwhile, if Mary is still married, where are Thomas and the sons?
