Tracing Severina Moses
« on: Saturday 28 January 17 11:50 GMT (UK) »
I am very new at the family history game so wonder if any more experienced researchers can help me. Severina Moses married Bridget West in Liverpool in 1868. He was a mariner and his father was Joseph Moses. She was born in Ireland but resident in Liverpool when they married. Severina seems to have died shortly after they married, certainly by 1871 when she remarried John Gilbert/o. I can find no trace of Severina after the marriage certificate. It is such an unusual name, this seems strange. Can anyone throw some light, please. Thanks, Lorraine.

Welcome to Rootschat, Lorraine :)

I see that the 1868 marriage is indexed on FreeBMD as Superior Moses, on the same page as Bridget West. (This seems to be an error - see my next post about the underlying GRO index).

The GRO typed index has his first name as Superina.

What is the source for Severina, as you had it.  Do you have their marriage certificate?

Added: it is definitely Superina, not Severina, on their marriage licence bond dated 2 April 1868 (marriage to take place at St Peter's, Liverpool).

Thanks for very swift responses. Yes, he's Superina or Superior or Moses or Moser! He may well have died at sea, as might have Bridget's second husband! She went on to marry a third time to Charles Oldridge from Canada (another mariner). Bridget and John Gilbert had 3 children: Caroline 1873; John 1875; Mary Ann 1880. She an Oldridge had a daughter Elizabeth 1885.

All of these men seem to have disappeared!

I do have marriage certificate for Severina and Bridget.

Does it say Severina or Superina? Does it give his age? What else does it tell you - who were the witnesses?

OOOPs ...sorry. Checked the marriage certificate and it IS Superina. You can see how confused I am. Thanks for pointing out my mistake. Important to get it right - lesson learned.Superina's age is given as 'full', as is Bridget's. They both add their 'marks' rather than signatures on the certificate. Witnesses were William West and Joseph Moses - I presume these are fathers?

Witnesses don't have to be the fathers but if their names correspond to the paternal details elsewhere on the certificate then they might well be.

What was the occupation of Superina's father said to be (far right column)?  If he was also a witness that is helpful as it means he was alive and in Liverpool on the relevant date.
