Oh for the wings of a Dove....
« on: Friday 03 February 17 20:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Christiana/Christian Dove married William Smith, 1818, in Marske by the Sea, North Riding, Yorkshire. She spent her married life in Tynemouth, which is where William was born.

I believe she was born around 1793-95, possibly in Robin Hood's Bay, or Moorsholm. In two censuses she says Redcar but that was the civil parish - I don't think she was born in the town.

In 1861, William Smith is a visitor in the Redcar household of Joseph Dove, born Robin Hood's. c1795. I think he is more than likely to be Christiana's brother.

I would really appreciate some Rootschat help in tracking down the Dove family.

I can't begin to tell you how excited I am to think that I might have ancestors from Robin Hood's Bay. I've been a little bit in love with the place since I slept in the shelter opposite the Bay Hotel, as a teenager with a bit of a wander-lust!

HAve you seen the 1851 Census?
It would seem to confirm Joseph was your Christian's brother.
Joseph is 55, wife Mary, children Susanna, 13, Thomas, 8, and CHRISTIAN aged 15.
(all these christenings on famsearch, at Redcar).
Also in H/H is Thomas Metcalf SMITH, aged 23, born Tynemouth. Given as Joseph's NEPHEW.
Thomas Metcalf Smith was born 17 April 1827 Tynemouth of William and Christian Smith.

Can't find suitable christenings on famsearch for Joseph and Christian at the moment.

Can only find this on FindMyPast:

Christian bp.9/9/1792 Skelton, North Yorkshire, dau. of Joseph Dove - looked at original page but next bit is hard to read, looks like, Miller of Moor....... mill (word doesn't look like Moorsholm though).

Couldn't find a baptism for brother Joseph though.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses so far! :)

I have all the various census entries. The Smith part of this family was my biggest brick wall for many years so finding William's wife at all was something of a triumph - thanks to other Rootschatters for this!

In truth, I am looking for Christian's parents and siblings and given that William Smith is with Joseph Dove in 1861, I am happy that Joseph is almost certainly Christiana's brother.

I like the baptism in Skelton....that is certainly close enough to Moorsholm to be believable. And it makes sense that her father would be Joseph - her second son was Joseph Dove Smith.

I thought I'd have another dig into this family. There is a marriage for a Joseph Dove in Yorkshire in 1790, which I can't check because I don't have a subscription to FindMyPast and my Ancestry Essentials Account doesn't allow me to look at parish records unless I upgrade. How can parish records not be essential? I think it might be time to rethink where I put my limited resources! Please could someone who does have a subscription, check this marriage for me? Many thanks in advance. :)
