Bearing in mind the confusion so far over the surname of Ann (wife of Edward)  There was a marriage Edward Cairns to Honora Gilhooly - Haddinton -

GILHOOLY HONORA - 1862 - 709/ 10 - Haddington

CAIRNS EDWARD - 1862 - 709/ 10 - 10 - Haddington

Thanks Sandra, I think that would be it, Ann being a shortened version of Honora I suppose, this is all brilliant information. Is there any occupation for Edward on the 1881 census
