Ann Norman father Joseph
« on: Wednesday 08 February 17 08:16 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the birth of Ann Norman about 1785. She lived in Lewes and married Henry Dunton/Daunton in Brighton in 1810. Later she married Jesse Pumphery in 1828 in Lewes.  They had sons Henry 1831 and David 1835. According to Ancestry.com their birth records (non-conformist) said Ann's father was Joseph Norman a shoe maker of Lewes.

Can any one help me please with this Norman family?

Ann and Henry Dunton had a daughter, Delia, in 1816.  St John sub Castro.  Henry is a shoemaker.  Also Mary Ann in 1825 when Henry is shown as a labourer.
Countess of Huntingdon  - 1811 Jos son of Henry and Ann
Lewes Independent Tabernacle - 1818 Mary dau Henry and Ann

Henry is buried age 49 in 1825  St John sub Castro

How sure are you of Ann's birth date?    There is a possible marriage for Joseph Norman to Mary Leadbetter in Lewes St Michael in 1790 and another to Mary Crass Weller (Crassweller) in Southease in 1794, though the latter is described as a farmer.

I expect you have all this.
Pumphery is not a common name is Sussex and seems to be centred around Barcombe.

Many Thanks. It looks possible. She was non-conformist at least in 1811-18 (Chapel in the Cliffe). Maybe they went to the Anglicans and was baptised using her maiden name.

How did you find it please?

I have been looking for Mary Ann and Delia for ages!!

The Sussex Family History Group have online records for members.  Well worth joining if you have Sussex Ancestors.

Thank you for your help.  It clears up some questions I have had for several years
My ancestor is Mercy Dunton, born 30 March 1818 and baptised at The Tabernacle (Mary in your reply) along with her brother Joseph.  I knew they had sisters Delia and Mary Ann but had not been able to find any record of their births.  I cannot find any other record of Joseph so I assume he died young, although again I can find no record of it.

Mercy married Stephen Pumphery son of Jesse and Ann (nee Humphrey not Norman).  Again I have not been able to find any record of his birth.  If you can find any information I would be very grateful.  He was born in Barcombe according to all the censuses, in probably 1822 or 1823.   I have some documentation about him as he was a millwright like his father and there are a couple of publications where they are both mentioned.

These 2 families get mixed up as Jesse later marries Mercy’s mother!

I am in New Zealand

Thanks again

The marriage at St Michael's Lewes for Jesse Pumfrey and Ann Humphry in 1809 shows that Jesse is of Southover.  I can't see a baptism for Stephen at the moment and will be busy for a couple of days but will try again after the weekend unless someone else can help.
