I am doing research into the McVitie family-founders of McVities biscuits. I am having difficulty in finding the date of death of William McVitie and his wife Jean McVitie ( nee Green) They appear on the 1841 census living in Edinburgh but not in the 1851 census. One report suggests that they returned to Dumfries their home town but I have found no records there. I have looked on roots for Dumfriesshire but have not had  any replies and Ancestry provided some information but the deaths given related to other McVities

No details given as to birthyears/birthplaces

Are you related to the family?

Have you checked the OPR's on Scotlands People?

Hi,

Scotland's People has 2 deaths on the Old Parish Register
St Cuthbert's Parish, Edinburgh

14/9/1842   Wm McVitie    age 76
14/2/1846   Jane McVitie   age 76     other details  Green/Wm McVitie

I would assume that when original record is looked at for Jane it will reveal her maiden name was Green and she was the relict /widow of Wm McVitie.

The original records for both can be viewed for a small cost on Scotlands People
Looby  :)

Was William who died 14/9/1842 aged 76 possibly the g/son or gg/son of the founder Robert McVitie?....

William Mcvitie who died in 1842 was the father of Robert McVitie the founder of the firm -born in Dumfries in 1809-died in Edinburgh 1883. Robert went to Edinburgh in 1830 with his father and mother and started the frim at 129 Rose Street. Hope this helps

Have obtained death records for William McVitie and his wife and these were recorded at St Cuthbert's Church in Edinburgh. However their grave is not recorded in the Churchyard Records and I did not find it during a physical check' If anyone has the information would welcome it and also for information on the burial place of their son the founder of McVities . Died in Edinburgh in 1883

If Jane McVitie was 76 in 1846, that would put her birth about 1770, which would make her 39 when Robert McVitie was born in 1809. That's not impossible, but it would be unusual. I wonder if there isn't another generation in between there.
