Woddersham, glos - where is it located??
« on: Friday 10 February 17 02:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I have a couple who married in 1710 in Urchfont, Wilts. The register (transcript) records Thomas Keite's parish as Woddersham, Glos whereas his wife's parish is shown as Escott (believed to be a tithing of Eastcott and part of Urchfont).

Can anyone, please, tell me where this place is. Its probably part of a larger known parish but no results come up in google.

Nothing coming up on the "Where is it in Gloucestershire?" page on GenUKI, either?
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/Where

Looks like a transcription error? :-\ :D

Just a thought, though?
Urchfont is in Wiltshire, not Gloucestershire.

Escott could refer to the hamlet in the parish of Stogumber, Somerset?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

County boundries change over time....

Wiltshire Wills (on-line) from the Records office - lists a number of KITE's from Urchfont

Google: Wiltshire Wills

then under  : KITE

Wiltshire & Swindon Archive Catalogue - Wills Search

?  Thomas KEITE and his 'wife' - what names did they give their children (looking for family names)

? With the dialect of Wiltshire/Gloucestershire is the "dd's" "tt's"

From the Gloucestershire Marriage Index CD's -  around that time: KEITE is also spelt KEIGHT/KITE

There are 3 at Wotton  (+ a few others in Gloucestershire)

Charles KITE/Martha BRINKWORTH 10 February 1683 : Wooton/Edge
William KITE/Tamar HOPKINS 22 April 1741 : Wotton/Edge
Charles KITE/Mary LONGDEN 3 August 1774: Wotton-U-Edge

Hi all,

Thanks for your suggestions.

This marriage is listed in the CD of marriages from the WiltsFHS and Thomas is recorded as "out of Wilts" and from  Woddersham, Glos with Hester Piggott from Escott (possibly a tithing in Eastcott forming part of Urchfont parish - source OPC-Wilts).

The link to Thomas being bapt. in Feb 1681 Todenham, Gloucs looks promising and his age does tie-in nicely to a marriage in 1710.
The names giving to their children appear as "no name", Thomas, George & Mary all bapt. in BathEaston, Som - assuming I have the correct family. Its the only Thomas Kite/Keite - m - Hester I have found.

As KG suggests it could have been mis-transcription with local dialects playing a role.
