Mary Cowling 1909 - ??
« on: Friday 10 February 17 11:58 GMT (UK) »
The birth of Mary Cowling was registered in Tavistock, Devon in December quarter, 1909.

In 1939, as Mary Nicholson ( Cowling,Nicholas) she was recorded in Torquay, together with James and Dorothy Tunkin.

Her marriage to Donald Nicolson was registered in Bridport, September quarter, 1944. Children Girvan,1946, Removed 1947.

The death of a Donald Nicolson, (D o b 8 June 1911) was registered in Torbay December quarter 1975. I can find no matching entry for his birth in Free BMD. Possibly born in Scotland. Could be Mary's husband.

I am looking for Mary's death. - thought to be after 2000. Also intrigued by the Nicholas reference.

I would appreciate any additional information that will add to my knowledge of this person.

Hmm, I'm scratching my head a bit as to why what I take to be the marriage date on the 1939 has the month of October.

If her marriage is registered in the Sept. quarter then in theory it can't have been in October.  Administrative mistake maybe?

Do you have the marriage cert?

The October date could refer to when the Register was amended to show her new surname.

Ooops. Sorry! I am fully aware of the restriction but completely overlooked it when I posted.

Perhaps the moderator will delete the name of the second child. The first is known to be deceased.

My thanks to all who took the trouble to respond.

I know nothing of Mary's husband other than his name. I qouted the Torquay death simply on the basis of potentially matching coincidences.

My suggestion that Donald might have been Scottish is, again, a speculation based on circumstance. The war memorial in Blair Atholl, Scotland, contains the name of Norman Nicholson who died in 1918. Another researcher  has identified him as the son of Donald and the husband of Elizabeth Girvan. I wondered if these might be the parents of Mary's husband which could explain their choice of a rather unusual name for their first child. Perhaps Donald had proposed it in memory of his widowed mother.

However, my principle person of interest is Mary. She was my mother's bridesmaid.
