any suggestions on missing census details, tried various name derivations but no luck

Was he a single man - occupation?

Might help in searching to have the names of wife/children - if he had any :)

1871 the family is under Warrington but son John not there so must be out on his own somewhere.

Possible 1871 in Stockton under Dunington - it could read We* instead of Du* right area/occupation
