Marriage ROBERTSON/ROBINSON and MCDOUGAL Kircudbright
« on: Wednesday 15 February 17 06:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Looking for the marriage of Andrew ROBERTSON/ROBINSON and Isabella McDOUGAL. Apparently a family Bible has their marriage as 31 May 1822 possibly in Kirkudbright although I have found nothing in a 10 yr period of that date anywhere on one particular website.
Their first child was possibly born in Wigtown in Oct 1822. Others were born in Troqueer, Rhonehouse and Tongland prior to their move to England.

Can anyone suggest anything from here please?
Thank you
Meegan

Hi Meegan

Before 1855, only about a third of marriage records are available for various reasons - see:

http://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/socialpolitical/research/economicsocialhistory/historymedicine/scottishwayofbirthanddeath/marriage/

There might be some information in the Kirk Session minutes of the parish but these are only available to inspect at Edinburgh/Glsgow and, I think,  some of the larger registry offices in Scotland.  Scotlands People are planning to have them available some time (promised for a long time but not yet materialised!).

There might be some indication in the baptism records of their children. Can you give names, approx dates and parishes of these so we can see if anything is available. Also, when did they move to England.

Hi Gadget
That is a great reference website, thanks for sending me there. The lack of formality might well explain the lack of any mention.
I am fairly sure Andrew was baptised Robertson at Crossmichael 1796, son of William and Mary Sloan. And he died in 1869 in Newcastle. Am assuming that Andrew and Isabella (his wife nee McDougal from Troqueer) moved to England between 1839and 1841

If you are able/happy to look up the children's baptisms I have are as follows (keeping in mind that I have seen the name as Robertson/Robinson/Robison sorry):
Mary Ann b. Oct 1822 Wigtown d, 1829 ?
William Feb 1824 Rhonehouse, d 1826
Alice b. Feb 1827 Kelton
Agnes b. Feb 1828 (was in 1841 census in Newcastle)
Isabella (my ancestor) b. Carmichael or Kinlaw (died Australia)
James b. abt 1834 ? where
Andrew b. 1839 Northumberland
Mary Ann b. 1841 Northumberland
Any help/suggestions really appreciated
Best wishes
Meegan

Hi

I'm finding the parents and 3 younger children in Newcastle on the 1851 but not on the 1841 at the moment.

1851
Chapel Lane, Westgate, N/T HO107/2404/360/48
Andrew Robinson, 53, stonemason, b. Scotland
Isabella, 48, b. -do-
James, 17, opticians apprentice, b. -do-
Andrew, 12, errand boy, b. Newcastle
Mary Ann, 9, scholar, b. -do-

Also Andrew and Isabella on the 1861:

1861
Railway Terrace, Westgate RG9/3816/4/1
Andrew Robinson, 62, mason, b. Scotland
Isabella, 57, b. -do-

Do you have them on the 1841?

One of the problems is that Rob*son is fairly common in the North East.

I'll check up on the children now.

Nothing so far for Agnes or James in whole of Scotland. It could be that records are missing.  I know that Parton records were missing for the 1820s as some of my kin were there but not found. I was told by the Sessions Clerk   :-\
