Alston: Martins c1765
« on: Thursday 16 February 17 13:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi. Looking to find any more info on my 5x GGM please. She married at ‘Lanchester Church (Durham): All Saints Denomination: Anglican 26 Dec 1791 William Cowper (Cooper) married Alice Martin’. A few of their children’s baptisms state Alice was native of Alston Cumberland, daughter of Joseph and one mentions a mother Alice. I’m pleased to have gotten that much info, but anything more on the Martin’s will be a bonus! So can anyone access Alston records please? Thanks.

Lots of Alston records are viewable (but unindexed) on Family Search

Thanks. Alas the dates are too late on the file that I can see. Cheers though; gives me hope earlier records might exist.

Both FreeReg and family search have a Joseph Martin having children in Alston. Some baptisms just give the father's name, others state Joseph and Elsy/Elsie.

Mary 1766 Joseph
Elsy 1768 Joseph
Matthew 1770 Joseph
Joseph 1773 Joseph and Elsy
Joseph 1775 Joseph and Elsie.

Could Elsy 1768 have become Alice?

Great, that looks promising thanks. I wouldn't be surprised at all with the spellings after some I've come across in my tree. I never manage well with FreeReg for some reason; I didn't get those when I searched earlier. I rarely find anything on there yet I do so well on other research usually. In fact you got it on FS too so I must have made an error in my criteria somehow. Thank you
