Occupation - housekeeper

Good afternoon 

I've just received a death certificate from 1882 with occupation stated as "Housekeeper of Cheadle" The woman died in a work house seemingly from a 3 month, possibly longer, illness.

My question is -  does housekeeper refer to her being a housewife or that she held a position in another household?

Having said that, I've "got 'em" where the wife has been described as "Housekeeper" as well as "Keeping House", "Domestic duties" and where a real "Housekeeper" has been described as exactly the same..... and one where the person described in one entry as wife, has been "demoted" to servant the next census, and in both is described as housekeeper! I wondered for a while if she was employed to keep house for the father-in-law, who lived nearby.......
-do you think that our ancestors did it all to confuse us?

That's my finding with most of my mob! Certainly, they manage usually to lead us up one or two blind alleys at some point. Good luck, keep searching..... is the "Cheadle" bit worth following up, do you think?
