Fold 3 is available at no charge at all Family History/Familysearch centres

That's handy to know  :)

A large part of the problem for me is Ancestry letting you search them, get results for them you're interested in but then denying access unless you sign up to fold3. What kind of deal has the NA done with our historical heritage?

Some of the Fold3 records are available free at the National Archives website, and others can be downloaded after paying a small fee. My wife's 2nd great grandfather's Chelsea military pension record came up as a hint on Ancestry, which directed me to Fold3. I found it for free at the National Archives.

If they seriously believe that I'm going to pay a penny more they are deluded.
After being a member for more than 10 years without so much as a tiny loyalty bonus, I am finding it increasingly difficult to pay the annual subs as it is.
I live abroad, so no chance of using a library version.

Your profile doesn't say where you are, but I've used Ancestry's library edition in various parts of Australia.  It includes the UK records which are pretty much the only ones I need.

Unfortunately I live in the Balearic  islands. The library facilities are limited to say the least.

I have recently returned to Ancestry UK after taking a 2-month break from researching WW1 soldiers on our local church's memorial plaque.  I am absolutely certain that military service record images were formerly included in my annual UK records membership fee but since returning, these appear now to be charged for via Fold3.  Is this correct?  I find it very unfair that this change was not highlighted at the time of signing up and I feel I have rejoined this website to continue my research only to find the very reason for rejoining has disappeared!!  I feel very disappointed.

I can't be certain, but think fold3 contents are US records.

You can still access these records via your subscription.

The military records that were on Ancestry are still there, nothing has been removed, but they have also been added to Fold3. The records that you can see ONLY on Fold3 are the most recent additions, and that's where any new military records will be added. The big collections involved are the Chelsea and Kilmainham records, which are also on Findmypast. There are also quite a lot of military records and resources on FindMyPast that Ancestry don't have.

There is free access to the Fold3 records at TNA, at FamilySearch Centres and through Ancestry Library Edition. Although the Ancestry site suggests you need an All Access sub to see the Fold3 records, as Smudwhisk points out, it is MUCH cheaper to get a a separate subscription to Fold3. The fact that is priced in US$ doesn't matter, you can still subscribe from the UK if you want to.
