« on: Sunday 19 February 17 11:30 GMT (UK) »
I need help, I have recently got my fathers record of service from the RAF, I am having great trouble in understanding it, under miscellaneous it states: Med. Cat. Grade 2. should be reconsidered for trg. at later date. Also the actual record is mainly numbers, can I get help ?

Welcome to Rootschat from me too.

I have just spoken to my husband who is Ex RAF.

His explanation is

Medical Category Grade 2   -  Not fully fit

trg stands for training - needed to retrain as he was not fully fit.

It would be helpful to know what his trade or job was at this time.

O.K. here goes according to my husband - makes no sense to me.

Mech  -  Mechanic  -  he is not sure about the SE but thinks it may be something electrical.

960 and 950 are actual Squadrons.

5011, 5710 and 5124  -  small units not big enough to be a Squadron

2wing  -  A large unit which is a combination of more than one Squadron. He is not sure what 9D.DC stands for.

Azores - Overseas posting to these islands.

Hope this is useful.

I think the rank of LAC is Leading Aircraftman?
Could be 1st Class or 2nd Class.

When on parade, and asked why he was still a LAC 2nd Class, my father replied "Because there isn't a 3rd Class, Sir"! ;D

Could Mech/SE be mechanic of safety equipment/survival equipment?

LAC - Leading Aircraftman

Thank you all for your responses, that has helped me a lot. So with that information could I assume that my father was attached to various squadrons as some sort of mechanic as he was not fit for active duty for some reason ?

Best Regards

Mike

Hi Mike,

I would not presume that your father was unfit for active duty. Medical categories usually have letters and numbers -

A4 G1 Z1

Can you see anything that resembles the above?
