Margaret Flynn, Laugh House, Kildare, Australia
« on: Monday 20 February 17 05:55 GMT (UK) »
i was hoping someone might be able to help me with an obscure request that I  have not been able to find through Google etc. I am doing family history and found this intriguing ad in our Trove database in Australia.

In Sydney Morning Herald, 19Aug1840 ad:

“Looking for Margaret Flynn, "Laugh House" Kildare thought arrived Apr 1833 on Bussorah Merchant. "Mother sister brother recently arrived on North Briton”.

This totally fits my family, where we have widow Mary Flynn and children John and Catherine arriving in 1839 on the North Briton in Sydney. They are from Queens County.

However I have consulted a few sources re: passengers on the Bussorah Merchant of 1833 and do not see her listed.

i do see a Margaret Flynn arrived on the Cabotia on 19 Sept 1833, aged 26.

Anyway - my questions are

1) Do you have any idea what “Laugh House” is/was?

2) Any record of Margaret Flynn (Parents John Flynn and Mary McNamara)?

Thanks in advance or any help or directions you might be able to give me.

I can't even find the ad on Trove.
Could it be Lough rather than Laugh.
Maybe Loughtown House.

Parish Registers if the family were RC.

There's at least one place called 'The Lough House' in Kildare (a thatched cottage at Cooksickin).

I searched Trove for the article also but couldn't get it- can you post a link to the page so we can see the scanned image please.

I think this is the article (or one similar), a few in differnet papers too

Actually, it's not from the SMH and doesn't mention "Laugh House", so sorry, I guess it's not the right one.  ???

That's for a Margaret FLINN but it is the correct date of the newspaper so perhaps OP can give us more clues like a link.

ok, here's the article

Well found  :)

'Laugh House' is in Kildare Town so that does narrow down the location.

Another post on Queens board-
I am hoping for help with my husband's Laois ancestors- have hit a brick wall. Siblings John Flynn b~1809, Catherine Flynn, b~1819 all came to Australia with mother Mary McNamara? Flynn b~1770 on the North Briton arriving 14/12/1839. Siblings Margaret Flynn b~1824, Bridget Flynn may have come earlier 1833?. Father John Flynn was dec. ll the details came from their ships' papers: John Flynn (Kildare?, Queens), mother Mary McNamara Flynn (Maryborough, Queens. p: Thomas McNamara and Margaret Hutchinson).
They are supposedly cousins with Thomas McNamara (Co Galway, b ~1814), son of Patrick McNamara and Ann Hough, arrived 1830s. Thomas McNamara from (Glencoe, Galway).

Wow.  Thanks very much for all those quick responses. Apologies for the inexact bits. The ad was placed in a number of papers, with more details each time over about 3 years.

Ended with:
 http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/12410637?searchTerm=%22margaret%20flinn%22&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc

By 18 July 1848, recently a widow of Richard Ryan, she was marrying a neighbour of her brother's, Charles Doyle.

In their time in Australia, the first Australian generation wavered between a written Flinn and Flynn but all ended up as Flynns.  If anyone has Ancestry.com, you can see the tree at "Annie Kelly Family Tree 4.

Thanks again for your prompt attention! Very exciting.
