NUGENT Thomas from County Tipperary, Ireland - Looking for Information

Hi,

I am looking for any information about my Great, Great-Grandfather, THOMAS NUGENT. Thomas was born around 1859 in County Tipperary, Ireland. He arrived in Brisbane, Australia via London, England aboard the S.S. New Guinea on the 3rd of March, 1886.

Thomas married Mary Agnes Callaghan (1886-1949) in 1902 in Queensland, Australia. Together they had four children: Agnes Isabella Nugent (b.1903), Eugene Laurence Nugent (1905-1952), Agatha Mary Nugent (b.1906), Thomas Charles Nugent (b. 1907). Between 1905 and 1913, Thomas resided in Red Hill and Ithaca, Brisbane.

I am particularly interested in finding Thomas' exact date and place of birth, as well as the name of his parents and any siblings.

Civil Registration of births didn't start until 1864 so Thomas won't have a birth cert so you need his Baptisim.
Thomas Nugent wouldn't be an unusual name so there could be several possibilities and without either of his parents names it may not be possible to work out which is the correct one.
You also need his religious donomation and Tipperary is quite a large county to search, ideally you need the townland or at least the parish he came from.

COI records are a bit more difficult.

Make sure you have searched all possible records in Australia for any clues, I'm sure someone with knowledge of Australian records will be along to help soon.

Hello Kris ref your query I can see 2 baptisms in Co Tipperary as possibilities

1  Thomas Nugent 30th April 1858.Parish Bansha & Kilmoyler Diocese Cashel & Emly. Father James Nugent Mother Catherine Martin.

2. Thomas Nugent 28th Dec 1857 Parish New Inn & Knockgraffon Diocese Cashel & Emly. Parents Michael Nugent & Alice English.

Do you have a Marriage record for Thomas or a Death Record they may give his parent/s details.

Kris are you sure he was born 1859?
It's quite a age gap with Agnes born 1886, not impossible of course, hopefully the marriage will have ages.

Thank-you kindly for the information. The first family plot in Toowong Cemetery you mention is my family. The other information, I am not so sure. I will try and decipher it. Much appreciated.

Sinann, I agree, it is a large gap between Thomas and Agnes. If my data is correct, Agnes would have been 16, and Thomas 42, when they wed. It's a little odd. I acquired my information from Ancestry.com, please see the files attached. Image removed

I would love to get to the bottom of this.

Ancestry has good record sets but you have to be very careful of any hints it gives you, it's very easy to go astray.
It's not always the best for Irish records.
Get his death and marriage Certs and that should ensure you are on the right track.
If Thomas proves to be younger as the first set of graves seems to indicate than he will hopefully have a birth cert (free) on this site https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

I completely agree, Sinann. Looking at the Australian records that wivenhoe has presented, I believe that the information I have received from Ancestry.com is incorrect. In hindsight, the age difference between Thomas and his wife Mary just did not add up. I believe the immigration record I received is potentially a different Thomas Nugent from my great-great grandfather.
