Looking for information about Mary Ann Dennis from Bristol
« on: Thursday 23 February 17 14:03 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any information about Mary Ann Dennis ( D.O.B approx. 1825) daughter of John Dennis - Ironmonger of Bristol. She married Charles Flower on 26 Jan 1842

Marriage Place
Clifton, St Andrew, Gloucestershire, England

Mary Ann Dennis (Flower) died in Warminster in 1849, but I cannot seem to find any information about her birth nor family.

Many thanks

Have you found her on the 1841 census?  As she died before the 1851 census - no birthplace known

Oooh that is brilliant thank you ! I feel as though I am trying to find a needle in a haystack looking for her in the 1841 census. I have a copy of her marriage certificate to Charles Flower, so I know her father was definitely John Dennis, but not much more than that, I am afraid.

so I know her father was definitely John Dennis

Not necessarily.  Many illegitimate children made up a fathers name/occupation when they married.

Remember the info I posted on your Obadiah Flower thread re: the 1842 marriage of William Flower/Ann Dennis?  Did you follow that through to see where Ann was born in case there was a link to Mary Ann?

As you know -  that marriage was in Newmarket and I traced them on the 1851 and both were born in  Fordham Cambridgeshire.  Ann was born around 1821

There is no proof that Ann Dennis is related to your Mary Ann but the possibility needs to be investigated

Unfortunately, that 1842 marriage is not transcribed on Family Search so no clues as to whether Ann's father was also called John

There are a Dennis Family on the 1841 Census living at Castle Street, Bristol who could be the family you are looking for.

John Dennis born 1781
Jane     "        "    1786
John     "        "    1821
Mary     "        "    1815
Jane      "        "    1821

I can find a bit of information of John Dennis ( Ironmonger ) from Bristol. It looks like he was born in Devon and married Mary (?) - I dont want to start barking up the wrong tree, so thought I would try to find more concrete proof. I did check out William Flower and Ann Dennis - despite the same surnames I am not entirely sure of the link though as my family of Flowers all were born in Heytesbury or Warminster. Feel like I have hit a stone wall here. I really appreciate all your help that you are giving me x

The 1851 has a Mary Dennis aged 26 living in Gloucs with parents John & Jane.  John is not an ironmonger - ??? factor - can't make out first word but none of family were born in Gloucs

Without knowing her actual birthplace - unless you can find her in 1841 with a father called John who is an ironmonger - it's an almost impossible task

It may be worth considering shelling out for the William Flower marriage cert with a condition on it that you only want it if father was John - occ ironmonger.  That way - if it doesn't match - you get your money back (check that first with the GRO)
