James Nuttall Boothman

 Looking for data on James Nuttall Boothman. D.O.B not known, died 18 July 1909. He was a former Mill Owner of Hopkins Mill in Brief field near Blackburn, served as Mayor of Blackburn for 2 consecutive terms , 1890 - 1892. Believed to have constructed Swansey Mill in Clayton-le-Woods, near Chorley and the construction of The Pines, his stately home on Preston Road in Clayton Green. This was converted into a hotel  and restaurant a new is probably one on few remaining mill owners mansions left in the central Lancashire area which is now under threat of demolition for housing and shopping and really should be listed.
Any thing on either subjects greatly appreciated.

James' death record gives his birth year as 1834.

Probate -
James Nuttall Boothman of The Pines Clayton Green died 18 July 1909. Probate to Jane Boothman (widow) and Lawrence Cotton, cotton manufacturer. Effects - £197979 0s 1d

It would appear that James' will was contested by his niece Mrs Martha Clayton  saying James was not of sound mind when the will was drawn up.

There is a newspaper article about James recording that in 1859 James Nuttall Boothman went to Blackburn and started work as a weaver in a local mill. His first weeks money amounted to 10s 7d, he rose to the post of overlooker and then manager. He then finally started a business for himself.

There is a marriage of a Thomas Boothman to a Betty Nutter (wonder if this should be Nuttall) in 1816. Perhaps James took his mother's maiden name as his middle name later in his life.

The James aged 9 on 1841 census (HO 107 piece 540 Bk. 11 F. 45 p.6) was living in Bank Lane which is in present-day Shuttleworth, now part of the town of Ramsbottom. On the 1851 census the family had moved a short distance to the then thriving village of Nuttall, now a park in Ramsbottom. James birthplace on 1851 census was stated as Marsden. Its possible that he adopted the middle name Nuttall from the place, if this was the correct James.
Edit. 1871 census his birthplace was Lancaster, Marsden, 1835. Was Marsden in Lancs. in 19thC ?

Birthplace of Jane Boothman on 1861 census may have been  Belmont, a village between Bolton and Darwen, or Belthorn, S.E. of Blackburn. 1871 was Belmont.

Marsden Lancashire was made up of Little Marsden which incorporated what is now Brierfield and Nelson and Great Marsden which was more towards Colne, but incorporated some of Nelson.  See:
