Information Required - 1301 Govan Road Glasgow
« on: Thursday 23 February 17 19:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

I'm after some help please.?

I have my late fathers birth certificate and it says he was born at 1301 Govan Road Glasgow.

He was born 16.9.1943, my grandmother for some reason had him here and I would appreciate any information anyone can help with. Was this a hospital then or was this a young mother's home as my grandmother had my Dad out of wedlock.

Many Thanks

Vickie King-Grange

It seems that it was a hospital at one time.  Others have asked about this too, and below is a link to one of the threads that popped up when I googled the address.

1301 Govan Road was the address of the Govan Poorhouse and hospital which later became the Southern General Hospital and more recently the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Although associated with the Poorhouse before the arrival of the NHS it was often the only access to hospital care available.

It became the practice to use a street address for the institutions to allay any stigma associated.
