« on: Thursday 23 February 17 21:43 GMT (UK) »
Looking for additional information on my 2nd great uncle.

He was baptized March 2, 1817 in Coldridge, Devon.  I have an image of the church record.

His parents were

Thomas Pope 1784–1847

Grace Handcock 1782–1867

His siblings were

Mary Pope 1809–  We know she came to Canada with Spouse John Hunt

Ann Pope 1811–1879  Ann passed in London, England

Grace Pope 1814–1880 Grace went to Australia with spouse Samuel Stevens and passed in Carlton, Victoria

Thomas Pope 1819–1912 Came to Canada in 1854 and married Janet ""Jessie" Clark in London, Ontario in 1857

William Pope 1824–1894  Came to London, Ontario in 1885 after passing of spouse Anne Lyne in 1873

Samuel Pope 1826–1897 Came to London, Ontario sometime between 1851 and 1861.  Based on his headstone his wife was Jane Munroe 1830-1913.  Unable to find a marriage.  Both passed in London, Ontario

Do you have any additional evidence that he survived infancy?

We have no facts to indicate he survived infancy.  Looked for a death record or burial but no luck.  A search at Find My Past finds no burial record in Coldridge area but assume records may be incomplete.  All other searches report no records

One oral history suggests he worked as a merchant seaman but really nothing to support that.

I see an 1841 census record that has a John Pope in Winkleigh with a "Lane" family.  I cannot see an original document.   John's brother William was married to  Anne Lyne.  Wondering if the "Lane" family was a transcription error of Lyne or Line

The 1841 in Winkleigh is Lane - second letter definitely an "a" not "y" or "i"

Head is John Lane 56 cordwainer

Pick - Frocester Glos

The 1841 John Pope is the right age - 23 - but occ is J (probably journeyman) shoemaker

I can't see him in 1851/1861 and he is not the March 1850 death as that John Pope was 67

With regard to John Lane being a cordwainer.

Several researchers have suggested John Pope was a shoemaker.  Likely based on several UK census documents and suggestions that there were shoemakers in the Pope line.  I find mainly carpenters or people who worked with wood but there are several people for which I have limited information.

Some have suggested John may have followed family to Canada but so far nothing concrete on that.  I do find John Pope here in Canada but nothing to indicate that is the "right" John Pope.

Hit post a bit too soon.  Needed to add:

The 1851 Canada census finds a John Pope age 38 and spouse Mary Pope with children Mary Jane Pope ( 8 ) and Margaret {a middle initial possibly I or T?} (5) living in Clarke, Durham County, Ontario.  Children were both shown as born in England so assume marriage was there as well. Most others in the family came to the London, Ontario area or Huron county which is north of London.

No sign of him in 1861 as yet and no death between 1851 and 1861 as yet.

Perhaps some research on a Mary Pope (unknown maiden name) and the two children will yield something.  Perhaps parents names on a marriage document.

I wonder where the marriage/birth of children would have been - Devon perhaps.

I can't see a Margaret Pope birth but there are some Mary Jane births.

As for a marriage there are two or three in Devon but one in Crediton which covers Coldridge is

Dec 1843
Honor Dun
William Matthews
John Pope
Mary Wreford

No guarantee John married Mary and I can't see a Mary Jane birth with MMN Wreford so probably not right.

Still no joy in Canadian searches.

I found an 1893 Kelly's Directory for Devon that mentions a John Pope carved an oak pulpit in Buckfastleigh.  We know a number of popes were carpenters, turners and woodworkers.

The carver John Pope was listed ass "the late John Pope".

The death in Canada that is close:

Name:   John Pope
Gender:   Male
Age:   78
Birth Date:   abt 1814
Birth Place:   England
Death Date:   28 Dec 1892
Death Place:   Northumberland, Ontario, Canada
Religion:   Church of England
Cause of Death:   Old Age & Dropsy

He was listed a a Gardener.  Informant was William Heattie.  That name not connected as far as found thus far.

US records have revealed nothing close this far.
