John Pope b 1817 Coldridge, Devon

I was able to view the 1841 census of Winkleigh, Devon ( a village that several Popes called home at various times) that has a John Pope born about 1818 Devon.  He is a shoemaker apprentice as found by CaroleW


His is with John Lane, cordwainer,  56yo with family.

The same Census of 1841 Winkleigh lists other Popes and the names/ages do not fit what information I have on the family.  Possibly John on the 1841 document is related to the unknown Popes also listed.

A recent change allowed me to access the Brushford Devon Census in its entirety.  Previous searches had found no matches.

This made the Brushford connection.

In the attached we see a John Pope Age 30 and an agricultural laborer with a Mary Pope age 65 and what appears to be a John Pope age 9.    The address is Moor End

Age 30 seems off for John Pope Born 1817.  And I have been unable to find a John born around 1832.

Some quick searching finds a Mary Pope baptism 11 Sep 1831 in Winkleigh with parents Samuel Pope and Elizabeth.  I have a first cousin Samuel Pope b Winkleigh 1790 and then a marriage of a Samuel Pope Winkleigh 02 Nov 1829 to an Elizabeth Cammell  That would fit a birth of a Mary Pope about 1831

Further digging finds an Elizabeth that matches the one listed as wife of Harris.

An Elizabeth Cammel, daughter of Elizabeth Cammel is christened 2 Nov 1829 Winkleigh, Devon, England.  Elizabeth Cammel(sr) marries Samuel Pope 2 Nov 1829 Winkleigh, Devon, England. Document for christening reports child Elizabeth is illegitimate.

The marriage document reports Elizabeth Cammel is a sojourner. Some trees report a birth in Ireland but no documents

In Brushford in 1849 there is a marriage for Elizabeth Pope to a Thomas Harris and her father is listed as Samuel Pope.  Neither can sign the document.  Residence for both is Partridge Wells

Seems to have been several Pope families in the area just to complicate things

On a bit of a different track after a recent record find at a local cemetery.

I find a John Pope birth unknown-3 Aug 1908   age  73 years and a spouse Angelina Pope birth unknown-5 Feb 1891 age 56 years.  Angelina's death record reports born Ireland and her husband was a city official

No image of the marker and no reply from Cemetery.  We are in lockdown so assume such requests are of lowest priority. 

I know the approximate area of the cemetery but have been unable to find the marker.

So age for this John Pope is about right and four of his siblings came to this area.

A John Pope married an Angelina Atkinson in 1859 at Christ Anglican Church (Montréal) but no details beyond names and year and church.

After some checking at cemetery, the  John Pope birth unknown-3 Aug 1908   age  73 years and a spouse Angelina Pope birth unknown-5 Feb do not seem connected to the John Pope  b 1817 Coldridge

I found a marriage for Born that links the Pope family in some way.  I do not seem to have an Elizabeth Pope that would fit,  Closest would have been born 1787 and I have her married to a Richard Baker in 1815 in Brushford  Can't be her.

So Elizabeth has a brother John based on the 1851 census.  Have I missed Elizabeth?  Based on the siblings of John b 1817 there are some gaps between births. Would that be abnormal?

I have seen trees that have Thomas Pope b1784 Brushford married to Ann Hamper.  No supporting documents.  Possibly Thomas had a first spouse?
