Johanna JORDAN Free Immigrant 'Fairlie' 1841
« on: Friday 24 February 17 00:53 GMT (UK) »
Seeking Marriage or Death information regarding Johanna JORDAN bc 1823, Carrigaloyne, Cork, Ireland who arrived on the Fairlie, to NSW as a Dairymaid in Nov, 1841 aged 18 yrs. Believed to have partnered or married Thomas SHEADY (1810-1862) or Sheedy at Galong, Yass District, NSW around 1844. Thomas' 2nd wife (Elizabeth Dempsey) had her first child to him in 1850 so it likely Johanna Jordan had died by then. Elizabeth states on Thomas' death certificate 1862 that he married Johanna Jordan at Galong and one child survives this marriage Mary Ann aged 17 yrs(c1845).

Hi there,

Here's a live link to the image of the passenger list for the Fairlie, into Sydney in Nov 1841, page 9.
http://indexes.records.nsw.gov.au/ebook/list.aspx?Page=NRS5316/4_4788/Fairlie_5 Nov 1841/4_478800299.jpg&No=9

Johanna JORDAN, Farm House Servant, aged 19, Roman Catholic, cannot Read/Write.

I understand that not all Roman Catholic marriages are findable at the NSW BDM's Early Church Records, particularly missing are those celebrated in some rural districts of NSW from the mid 1830s to the very early 1850s.   Civil Registration commenced in March 1856, but prior to that, the clergy of all denominations were meant to transmit details of their ceremonies through to their Diocese/Head Offices and to the Colonial Admin.  The 'rules' were not always 'obeyed'.

Well found cupoflife.  15 Oct 1845.

Many thanks for your replies, will just have to be content with the knowledge that everything is not cut and dried and some facts are just not able to be verified...cheers and thanks

On the same link that CoL has put up, someone is seeking information about the records of St Augustine's, Yass looking for the marriage record for Johanna and Thomas.  An answer is also on the website -  The records are available at the Yass Historical Society, I have retrieved info from them before, for a small fee.

Worth a try perhaps.
