Missing two great aunts post 1911
« on: Friday 24 February 17 15:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Might be pushing my luck here but here goes. I have two great aunts that I have struggled to trace since 1911.

Alice May Pope b 1st March 1884 in Flushing Cornwall
Ethel Margaret Pope b 3rd November 1885 in Stonehouse Devon

I believe they moved up to Surrey to work and where they appear in the 1911 census.

After that we have no idea. My father, born in 1937 vaguely recalls two old aunts coming to stay during the war but cannot confirm any more than that. We have no idea whether they ever married.

Is this where the 1939 index comes into play?

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Yes indeed the 1939 could help you out especially as you have exact dates of birth.

They could be spinster aunts who lived together.

Where was your father living when they visited?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Alice May Pope appears in nursing registers as a "mental nurse" - registered 15 Feb 1924, London.

1925, 1928: Mental Hospital, Caterham, Surrey

She's on electoral registers at that hospital between 1920 and 1929

There's a probate entry for Alice May Pope, spinster of Hill Crest, Fore Street, Kingsand, Cornwall died 28 April 1964 at Meneage hospital, Helston. Administration with will to Arthur George Pope, retired member of marine police.

Does that ring any bells?

Think this is the related registration
