Violet (Vi) May Hughes or Elson
« on: Friday 24 February 17 22:13 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace my husband’s mother, Violet (Vi) May Hughes. She was born in Herriard, Hampshire on 11 December 1926. Her parents were Sarah Jane (Sissie) and George Hughes. She married Walter Robert (Bob) Elson in 1948. In 1950 she had a son  in Basingstoke. She ‘disappeared’ around 1954 when we think she was living in Winslade, Hampshire. Vi suffered from epilepsy. I am aware that she has probably died as she would be 90 years old by now, plus her name can be seen on the 1939 register. (If she was alive it would be blocked). However, her son has a compelling need to know what happened to her after she left and if she had any other children - who would be his half-siblings. I have attached the only photos we have of her. One when she was about 14 and the other taken in 1948. Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi

Rootschat has a no living persons policy so you need to remove the son's name from your post

Access your post and click on "Modify" in the right hand corner

I see Walter died in 1988.  Did he ever re-marry?  If so - did he divorce her or have her declared as dead after 7yrs absence?

Winstanley is in Wigan.  Do you know why she was living so far from Hampshire in 1954?

Thank you for your information. Have modified my message. I got the name of the village wrong too - it should have read Winslade, Hampshire.

Does the 1939 census show her future married name as Elson?

All things being equal,in that she kept her forenames as such, she appears not to have died in England or Wales prior to 2007.

No, there is no notification of Elson on the form which I took to mean that she hadn't changed her name on any forms subsequent to her marriage.

I agree. The funny thing is, I found a Violet May ELLIS who died in Cambridge in 1998 so I sent off to the GRO for a certificate - just in case maybe it was her. Literally a few minutes ago I received an email to say that they can't find it. I guess I may have got the information wrong but am going back to check.
