John s/o William & Sarah Thirkettle 1714? Pulham
« on: Saturday 25 February 17 23:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Some help, please.

I've been trying to fill some gaps with my research into the Thirkettle family of the Pulham area.

I'm looking for a marriage of William Thirkettle 1681-1753 (Pulham St. Mary Magdalene) and Sarah (dates and details unknown) and the birth of who I believe to be their first child John sometime in the period 1710-15...

William's will dated 1751 and proved 1753 names his two sons John and Henry, and son-in-law William Green (husband of his late daughter Ruth), but no other relatives.

Henry was baptised at Pulham St. Mary Magdalene in 1716, and Ruth in 1722, but no sign of a John, or a marriage of William and Sarah.

Any help or leads much appreciated!

James

Sarah Thirkettle wife of William buried July 1724 on the 6th or 26th depending on transcription at St Mary Magdalene Pulham.
I'll see if I can get a look at the original

Added looked at the original it's the 26th July 1724

The Norfolk Record Office has a settlement certificate for John Thirkettle wife Ann and son John
dated 27 October 1739, they were living in Great Moulton and the certifying parish is St Mary Magdalene Pulham.
This would be the John Thirkettle who married Ann Archer 2 October 1737 and had a son John bap 16 July 1738 at St Mary Mag. Pulham.
Ref: PD 489/42/25

This document may or may not have more information than the index. If a full examination is included it will give his birth year and parents.

Added:
They also have a will of John Thirkettle dated 1724 of St Mary Magdalene Pulham
a possible brother to William Ref Lawrence 231 year 1724

Thanks so much for all this. Really helpful.

Will check that settlement certificate to see if it contains any further detail. Other children of John Thirkettke and Ann Archer baptised at Great Moulton:

Ruth 27.12.1741
Henry 9.1.1745
William 4.1.1746
George 21.8.1748
Henry 14.8.1763

(are there more? Gaps seem to be quite large...)

The will of John Thirkettle you mention (d.1724, Pulham) is very likely to be William's father.

Anyway, more to do.

James

Cannot check parish register images as family search is down for maintenance.

Henry Thirkettle (son of William and Sarah) buried 31 August 1828 age 84 St Mary Mag. Pulham
His will ref: NCC Farrow 387 Norfolk Record Office
It's on Norfolk Sources.
He may have outlived most of his children, written 22 April 1828
Executors Samuel Brett of Pulham, Gardener, and Robert Rayson of Pulham, blacksmith.
He was a farmer, everything to be sold farm implements, stock, hay, furniture and household goods

Daughter Mary w/o Samuel Brett, son Henry Thirkettle, son William Thirkettle, the 4th part to be divided between his two granchildren, Ann w/o James Vyze of Barhsam Norfolk, carpenter and William Booty.
You may have this already
Henry had married Mary Belling 7 November 1744 St Mary Magdalene Pulham
children
Margaret bap 6 May 1746
Sarah bap 6 May 1750
John bap 7 December 1750
Susan bap 16 March 1753
Ann bap 28 June 1755
Henry bap 8 February 1757

I wonder if Mary is actually the Margaret bap 1746 if not there's a baptism missing.
