Bermondsey board of guardians - St Olaves workhouse
« on: Sunday 26 February 17 11:42 GMT (UK) »
I have a Gladys E CHASMER registered in 1909 at St Olave Union workhouse Bermondsey aged 7

I have her in the 1911 census at the Bermondsey workhouse School Croydon aged 9

Searches give no record of her birth, marriage or death (with the surname Chasmer).

Any thoughts on how I could find out who her parents were or what happened to her?

A St Olaves record gives me the name of a relative which links me to a family group but not to the answers I am seeking.

There's a Gladys W Chasmer who married Leonard G. W. Gay in 1932 - possible daughters for them in 1940 and 1942 - however tracing this lady forward she died as Gladys Winifred Gay giving DOB as 27 March 1907 (still possible if she adjusted her age? Her husband was born 1909 so she might have wanted to close the gap).

There's no sign of a birth for this lady in England/Wales, or a census record for her in 1911, which is why she caught my attention.

What is the relative/family group you have her connected to via the workhouse records? We might be able to make some connections if we know what other names/surnames are linked to this girl.

The below is a link to workhouse information.

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/StOlave/#Records

Right at the bottom of the page are links to records that could be searched.  You might be able to find her through one of those.

There is another story attached to Gladys Winifred Chasmer.  She was actually born Gladys Winifred Smith but took the surname of an uncle (Chasmer) who brought her up.

I am sure the Gladys in they workhouse is a different person.
other story.  There were tow sisters Mary Ann Chasmer and Harriet Selina Chasmer.  Harriet had two illegitimate children and one was named Albert Curling Chasmer.  Her sister Mary Ann married Albert William Curling so it looks as though Mr Curling bedded the sister of his wife.  Harriet married.  Her husband died before 3mar1901 an Harriet died in 1905.  Gladys was born in 1902.  So maybe Harriet had another child after her husbands death (also maybe by Mr Curling) and then after her death Gladys was taken into the Mary Ann and Mr Curling household only to be put in the workhouse in 1909.

A lot of conjecture but what I do not understand is why I cannot find any info on Gladys relating to her birth and subsequent life.

Thanks for the link but this website does not seem to be functioning.  I have a few standard entrance and discharge docs for the workhouse but no further useful information.  The Metropolitan Archives is listed as having 31 linear metres of documents relating to St Olive Union/Workhouse.

Ancestry have records as below

All London, England, Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records, 1659-1930

Gladys comes up on the records but I don't have a sub any more so can't look at the images.

I just put in Gladys name and year of birth and nothing else.  She comes up as the first one on the list.

Your Gladys' dob in 1909 given as 2 Nov 1902 & pob Bermondsey. No Bermondsey births of a Gladys E in Dec 1902 or Mar 1903.

1909 admission gives address as 1 Wolseley St; maybe worth seeing who was living there in 1901?Discharged to Elmwood [ ??? the Croydon school].

ADDED:
1 Wolseley St now a doctor's surgery. Cannot yet find on an address search of 1901 census.

The link works fine for me:

Managed to get thru to the workhouse site but this info and that at Ancestry doesn't add anything.

I will try the census records for 1901 and 1911 for both 1 Wolseley St and 86 Rolls Road Bermondsey as both as shown on the workhouse documents to see if anything there is relevant.
