Joseph Wareham Tarrant Monkton married 1771 Betty Carter
« on: Sunday 26 February 17 19:37 GMT (UK) »
Researching Joseph Wareham married 16th September 1771 to Elizabeth (Betty) Carter, Tarrant Monkton, Dorsetshire. I am not able to identify Joseph's birth date or location. Joseph is my direct line. I'd be grateful for any help in this area. Thank you Chris Wareham. ;D

Well there is one baptism for a Joseph Wareham:-

In Allington on 15 October 1749 parents William & Martha at St. Swithun Church

This was on free reg between 1730 and 1755

Have you viewed the original marriage record  to see if it mentions whether Joseph is of this parish (Tarrant Monkton) or some other parish?
Ashford: Somerset, London
England: Devon, London, New Zealand
Holdway: Wiltshire
Hooper: Bristol, Somerset
Knowling: Devon, London
Southcott: Devon, China
Strong: Wiltshire
Watson: Cambridgeshire
White: Bristol
Windo - Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire

Hi Girl Guide, Thank you for replying. I have that Joseph you mentioned on my records but I am quite certain he is different although I do need further evidence to discount him completely; also I have searched 20 Josephs, of which 2 are possible by age but one is born 1704 so suggested unlikely, the other born 1732 but had moved to Portsea as a Carpenter and no evidence he returned to Dorset. He appears to have stayed until at least 1779 when he took on an apprentice.
As for the marriage certificate, I have not been able to locate where it might be held, would you have any ideas? as that would be a superb step forward.
I have tried to locate Elizabeth (Elisabeth) Betty Carter but again not got very far.
Thank you  :)

I suggest that you contact the Dorset History Centre and ask them if they have any marriage records for Tarrant Monkton.

https://www.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/dorsethistorycentre/contact

You could also try contacting the Dorset Family History Society to see if they can help with the marriage record.

http://www.dorsetfhs.org.uk/contact-us/

Please bear in mind that marriage records in the 1700's would be fairly basic so the information from the original may not give you any helpful information.

Do make it clear that you would like information from the original record not from a transcription.

Good luck.

Hi
Tarrant Monkton marriages are on the Dorset OPC site.
http://www.opcdorset.org/TarrantFiles/T.Monkton/TarrantMonkton.htm
Unfortunately it looks like this record has no extra info at all.

BTs   16   Sep   1771 Joseph   WAREHAM  &   Elisabeth   CARTER

The baptism records are also on the site, there are a lot of Carters, but I can't see an Elizabeth born early enough to marry in 1771.  There's a Betty b. 1738 (too early?) and an Elizabeth b. 1764 (too late).

Hi Bev j, thank you for looking. I have just been to the Who Do You Think You Are Live show at the Birmingham NEC and I managed to get 15 minutes with an expert; Rosemary was very helpful and has given me a couple of tips on how to find Joseph Wareham. I need to trace the children down the line and see if Joseph is shown as a widow; also, to check the Burials - Rosemary mentioned that the Transcribed records should not be trusted completely, so I am rechecking name spelling, The National Burial Index and the children's lines. Hopefully, we will be successful. Thankyou for helping. Good Hunting. Chris Wareham

 8) For information if it helps anyone; the update to this was that i did find Joseph and Betty Carter in the Dorset Wills; ironically, i already had copies of some Wills stored in my archives ready to view, but had not viewed them. Within 2 hours of looking through them, i found Joseph, his brother, his sisters a nd a nephew. I have since now moved the line back another two generations to 1698 and am heading towards the next brick wall at 1620.
For anyone in a similar situation, please don't give up. I have been searching for Joseph since 2001.
Happy New Year and Good Hunting. Chris Wareham.
